RESUMO

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare condition that occurs normally in the anterior maxilla of infants aged <1 year. The use of clinical and imaging tools for MNTI is extremely important to prevent problems with function as well as the aesthetic features in a breastfeeding child. Brazil is a multiethnic country with a poor epidemiological policy and little data to track the incidence of certain diseases, including MNTI. It is important to study this pathology with ethnicity as a factor to improve the current epidemiological programs and establish better post-treatment management. This paper describes a case of a 2-month-old male of African-indigenous descent and Brazilian Amazon residency, who presented to our unit in 2009 with a history of an expanding mass involving the anterior maxilla. Clinical and computerized tomography scans were used to diagnose the mass as MNTI, which was removed by total excision. A biopsy later confirmed the MNTI diagnosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review is to evaluate the principal clinical and conventional radiographic features of non-syndromic keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) by systematic review (SR), and to compare the frequencies between four global groups. METHODS: The databases searched were the PubMed interface of Medline and LILACS. Only those reports of KCOTs that occurred in a series of consecutive cases, in the reporting authors' caseload, were considered. RESULTS: 51 reports, of 49 series of cases, were included in the SR. 11 SR-included series were in languages other than English. KCOTs affected males more frequently and were three times more prevalent in the mandible. Although the mean age at first presentation was 37 years, the largest proportion of cases first presented in the third decade. The main symptom was swelling. Over a third were found incidentally. Nearly two-thirds displayed buccolingual expansion. Over a quarter of cases recurred. Only a quarter of all SR-included reported series of cases included details of at least one radiological feature. The East Asian global group presented significantly as well-defined, even corticated, multilocular radiolucencies with buccolingual expansion. The KCOTs affecting the Western global group significantly displayed an association with unerupted teeth. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term follow-up of large series that would have revealed detailed radiographic description and long-term outcomes of non-syndromic KCOT was lacking.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study analyzed maxillary osteosarcoma in a mestizo population, with particular emphasis on the type of treatment and disease-free and overall survival. METHODS: This is a retrospective study including all mestizo patients with osteosarcoma of the maxilla seen in a single cancer institution in Mexico during a 20-year period. RESULTS: There were 21 patients. Age ranged from 16 to 76 years (mean, 37.5 y). Mean evolution time to diagnosis was 13 months, with a mean tumor size of 7 × 6 cm2. Surgery was the initial treatment in 19 patients, 17 of whom received adjuvant treatment. Disease-free survival according to surgical margin and overall survival were not statistically significant. Disease-free survival was 29% at 5 years, and overall survival was 50% and 25% at 5 and 10 years, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Osteosarcomas of the maxilla are infrequent lesions that merit early diagnosis and proper treatment because of their rapid evolution. Treatment is currently based on a well-planned surgery with free surgical margins plus adjuvant radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We sought to estimate the incidence rates and disease trends for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the maxillofacial region in the civilian population in the north of Jordan. METHODS: A retrospective study was undertaken of all BCCs of the maxillofacial region diagnosed at the Regional Histopathology Department during the period 1991 to 2000. RESULTS: The age-adjusted rate for BCC in 1992 was 6.3:100,000, and in 2000, it was 8.8:100,000. However, several disease trends were observed during the study period. Age- and gender-specific incidence rates apparently increased during the study period. Lesions were most commonly seen on the nose, facial skin, and periorbital skin. The proportions of BCC in the various anatomic sites that were reviewed remained fairly constant over the 10-year period. CONCLUSIONS: In comparison with populations from other geographic areas, the incidence of BCC in the north of Jordan is low. Further studies are needed to identify behavioral and environmental factors that contribute to the development of BCC and to determine whether changes in diagnostic practices could account for the apparent rise in the incidence of this tumor in this population in recent years.

RESUMO

The gigantiform cementoma presents as multiple opacities in the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. Sixteen cases are presented, six of British Negresses and 10 of Hong Kong Chinese females. The differential diagnosis and management are briefly reviewed.
